Montas going on paternity leave; A's will add pitcher

The A’s once again will be bringing up a pitcher from the San Jose alternate site, as starter Frankie Montas was placed on paternity leave following Sunday’s 6-3 loss to the Texas Rangers.

The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reported Sunday that Montas and his wife Nicholette are expecting a daughter.

Manager Bob Melvin said after the game that Oakland will add a pitcher to replace Montas, as well as a 29th man in light of Monday’s doubleheader with the Seattle Mariners at the Oakland Coliseum.

Montas was the losing pitcher Sunday, allowing four earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven. After beginning the season as the A’s Opening Day starter, Montas has struggled as of late. He only surrendered four earned runs in his first four starts combined, but has allowed at least four earned in all but one of his appearances since.

The A’s have 14 games to go in the 2020 season, and the magic number to clinch an AL West title sits at eight as of Sunday night.

Melvin has had to adapt this rotation throughout the season as Oakland has navigated injuries and schedule changes, and the A’s depth once again will be tested this week, with four games on the docket over the next three days.
