In the bottom of the fifth inning, Max Muncy hit a ball up the middle. Brandon Crawford ranged to his left to field the ball and made a spinning throw to first base that forced Sandoval to stretch for it.

Sandoval caught the ball and kept his foot on the base for the final out of the inning, but as he used his hands to brace his landing, Muncy stepped on the right one.
Instantly, Sandoval knew something was wrong and looked at his hand. The Giants' trainer examined Sandoval between innings and decided he couldn't stay in the game.
When Sandoval's spot in the order came up in the top of the sixth, Tyler Austin pinch-hit for him and drew a walk.
