Giants select lefty pitcher Whisenhunt with No. 66 pick

The Giants selected their second pitcher on the opening night of the 2022 MLB Draft.

With the No. 66 pick in the second round, San Francisco took left-handed pitcher Carson Whisenhunt, a 6-foot-3, 209-pound southpaw out of East Carolina University.

Whisenhunt caught scouts' attention as a high schooler in 2019 out of North Carolina but ultimately went undrafted.

In one full season at East Carolina, Whisenhunt posted a 6-2 record with a 3.77 ERA in 62 innings pitched, while striking out 79 batters.

Whisenhunt entered the 2022 season as one of the best healthy college lefties but received a year-long suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug that he claimed was in a supplement he took.

Prior to the suspension, many draft analysts had Whisenhunt as a first-round pick, which could present San Francisco with another high-upside move to pair alongside their No. 30 pick and two-way player Reggie Crawford
