Where Giants rank among MLB's top-10 bullpens in 2022

Was a league-best 107 wins not enough?

Apparently not.

And now, one season later, the Giants must prove themselves all over again with MLB Opening Day just around the corner.

The Giants' bullpen, like always, is expected to take them far in 2022. It was arguably one of the most underrated parts of the squad during their 2021 campaign.

With the return of America’s favorite pastime comes the return of pre-season projections.

MLB.com released its ranking of the top 10 bullpens in baseball, and the Giants are sitting right in the middle.

5. Giants
Closer: LHP Jake McGee
Primary setup men: RHP Tyler Rogers, RHP Camilo Doval, RHP Zack Littell, RHP Dominic Leone

“Manager Gabe Kapler said he's planning on using McGee as his closer to start the season, but any of the above names could close games,” Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com wrote. “The most enticing name of all is Doval, who flashed his 102 mph fastball and closed games (including a six-out save vs. the Dodgers in the postseason) after coming up late last year.

"Weirdly, some projections aren’t kind to this group. FanGraphs lists the Giants bullpen 21st in its projected WAR rankings. But the Giants had the best relief ERA (2.99) in MLB last season. And with everybody back, we think they’ll have a good bullpen."

Castrovince listed other clubs' bullpens as follows: Atlanta Braves (1), Chicago White Sox (2), Atlanta Brewers (3), New York Yankees (4), San Francisco Giants (5), Los Angeles Angels (6), Tampa Bay Rays (7), Los Angeles Dodgers (8), Toronto Blue Jays (9) and Seattle Mariners (10).

Manager Gabe Kapler announced that Logan Webb will be his Opening Day starter when the Giants face the Miami Marlins on April 8 at Oracle Park.

The well-deserved honor comes after an incredible breakout season last year. The 25-year-old RHP spooked the NL West after hitting a two-run homer, his first career home run, to give the Giants a 9-1 lead in a game they had to win to clinch the division.

Oh, speaking of the NL West, he absolutely dominated the rival Dodgers twice at home during the NLDS. And even though San Francisco fell short to Los Angeles in a classic, intense series, the major league knew who Logan Webb was.

Prior to the 2021 season, Castrovince created a similar list of the MLB’s best 10 bullpens.

The Giants didn’t make the list.

But Kapler and his team don’t care about rankings as San Francisco quietly but steadily obliterated every projection system last year.

It’ll be a whole new ball game without Buster Posey, Kevin Gausman and Kris Bryant, but for the Giants, the pressure isn’t anything new.
