Klay channels Kobe, counts NBA titles at Giants-Dodgers game

A little over a month after winning his fourth NBA title with the Warriors, Klay Thompson soaked in the sun while taking in the Giants-Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium on Sunday.

Thompson was there mostly to watch his younger brother Trayce, who is an outfielder for the Dodgers. But he also enjoyed himself throughout the game, engaging with fans on several different occasions.

At one point, cameras caught Thompson waving at fans and then using his fingers to count out how many NBA championships he has won.

Thompson's gesture looked very similar to something his idol, Kobe Bryant, did during the 2014-15 NBA season while sitting out a game against the Dallas Mavericks. In response to heckling fans, Bryant held up five fingers representing the five titles he won while with the Los Angeles Lakers (H/T Bleacher Report and House of Highlights).

Thompson's love for Bryant is well-documented. Growing up as the son of Mychal Thompson in Los Angeles gave Klay the chance to spend quite a bit of time around Kobe.

During last week's ESPYs award show, Thompson won the award for Best Comeback Athlete and made sure to thank his childhood idol during his speech.

"The best memories I have growing up here in Southern California are going to STAPLES [Center] with my father. I had a privileged life," Thompson said last Wednesday. "He was a commentator for the Lakers, and I would go to every game early just to watch Kobe do his thing.

"Lastly, I would like to thank the Bryant family because -- I don’t know if Vanessa’s out there watching -- but to Vanessa and her three beautiful girls, we think of Kobe and Gigi every day. I read 'Mamba Mentality' every day during rehab.

"Those are the best memories of my life watching him play. He inspired me to be the athlete I am today."

That drew a heartfelt thank you from Vanessa Bryant, the wife of the late Bryant and mother of Gigi Bryant.

Whether or not Thompson knew he was mimicking Bryant gesture is unknown. But considering how close the two champions were, it's very possible Klay knew exactly what he was doing on Sunday.
