NBA rumors: Warriors likely can't make roster moves until mid-August

The NBA's coronavirus suspension threw the league's calendar completely out of whack back in March. Now that the league is expected restart of the 2019-20 season later this month, many have wondered when teams like the Warriors can begin making trades and other roster transactions.

We'll likely be waiting for a few more weeks before the NBA's moratorium on transactions is lifted, as ESPN's Bobby Marks reported Thursday, citing sources.

"The likely resolution here is that the league and the union will agree to lift the transaction moratorium once the first round of the playoffs begins on Aug. 17," Marks wrote. "Teams eliminated from the playoffs will be allowed to make trades, sign eligible players to contract extensions and waive players with at least two years left on their contracts."

Golden State is not one of the 22 teams flocking to Orlando for the NBA's restart. Typically teams who don't qualify for the postseason can begin making transactions after the playoffs begin in April. Marks does note that while the transaction window likely will open in mid-to-late August, teams likely will hold off on any major trades or signings.

"Because future salary-cap and luxury tax numbers are still unknown," Marks continued. "Expect teams to hold off on making real moves, even if the moratorium is lifted."

The Warriors have plenty of chess pieces for a potential offseason trade, including the $17.2 million trade exception courtesy of the Andre Iguodala deal, and the guarantee of a top-five draft pick.
