Wiseman sprains ankle during 3-on-3, will miss Blazers game

SAN FRANCISCO -- James Wiseman can't catch a break. After finally finding his rhythm and impacting NBA games in multiple ways for the Warriors, the reserve big man was a surprise addition to Friday's injury report.

He initially was listed as questionable with a left ankle sprain, and officially will not play against the Portland Trail Blazers. That raised the question: When did Wiseman get hurt?

It wasn't during any of the Warriors' previous games, including the seven-plus minutes Wiseman played Wednesday night in a win over the Utah Jazz. Unfortunately for Wiseman, the young 7-footer rolled his ankle while playing 3-on-3 earlier Friday morning.

"It's just unfortunate," Steve Kerr said during his pregame media session. "It's fairly common for guys who get limited minutes to get extra work in the morning after shootaround. He just rolled it, it doesn't seem too serious but he'll miss tonight's game."

Kerr later called Wiseman's status "day-to-day."

The Warriors finish their eight-game homestand with games Monday against the Atlanta Hawks, Wednesday against the Detroit Pistons, next Saturday against the Orlando Magic and the Phoenix Suns on Jan. 10.

"I haven't talked to the training staff yet," Kerr said. "I just basically got a text saying he rolled his ankle and he's out. I'd say day-to-day, but that's without really having a full breakdown from the staff."

Wiseman, since returning from a month in the G League, has played in the Warriors' last seven games. He has averaged 12.7 minutes, 7.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. That includes a career-high 30 points against the Brooklyn Nets, followed by a plus-8 in plus/minus while not taking a shot but providing five rebounds and strong defense over eight minutes off the bench against the Memphis Grizzlies on Christmas Day.

For Wiseman and the Warriors' sake, his ankle sprain is hopefully a tiny blip in a road that has been full of bumps, twists and turns to start his NBA career.
