Tevin Coleman to undergo MRI on ankle he injured in 49ers' Week 1 win

TAMPA, Fla. -- The 49ers appeared to be getting most players back to health in Week 1, but San Francisco lost running back Tevin Coleman to an ankle injury after the first half of Sunday's season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Coleman ran the ball six times for 23 yards and made two receptions for 33 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter. Coleman's longest run was for 12 yards, and the 49ers ruled him out at the start of the second half.

As a result of Coleman's injury, Matt Breida and Raheem Mostert split carries in the backfield.

Breida was temporarily sidelined due to hydration issues after carrying the ball five times for six yards in the second quarter. He returned to start the second half.

After the 49ers went on to beat the Bucs without Coleman, coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Coleman would undergo an MRI exam Monday on his left ankle. Shanahan admitted he was "concerned" about the severity of Coleman's injury.

In Coleman's absence, the 49ers could promote Jeff Wilson Jr. -- who, coincidentally, made his debut in Tampa last season -- from the practice squad. If Coleman's injury indeed is serious, San Francisco could also be in the market for a veteran option such as Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon. Gordon currently is holding out and looking for a new contract.
