Meet the Sharks' 2022 draft class, including Bystedt, Lund

New Sharks general manager Mike Grier was busy over the two-day 2022 NHL Draft.

After trading down in the first round and selecting center Filip Bystedt on Thursday night, the most significant move Grier made Friday was trading for former first-round pick Luke Kunin. Grier also drafted eight additional players into the Sharks organization to join Bystedt in the 2022 class -- four defensemen, three forwards and one goaltender.

Here's information on each member of the Sharks' 2022 draft class:

Round 1 (No. 27 overall): Filip Bystedt, C, Linkoping HC (Sweden-JR)

Nation: Sweden | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 6-4, 204 pounds

Originally owning the No. 11 choice in the draft, the Sharks acquired the No. 27 selection and two second-round picks in a trade with the Arizona Coyotes. Bystedt became the first draft choice in the Grier era. In 40 games last season with Linkoping HC Jr., the teenager tallied 16 goals and 33 assists and a plus/minus of 23. He also chipped in two goals and an assist helping Sweden win the 2022 IIHF Under-18 World Championship.

Round 2 (No. 34): Cameron Lund, C, Green Bay (USHL)

Nation: USA | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 6-2, 192 pounds

San Jose began Friday by drafting Lund with the second pick of the second round. Lund, who hails from Bridgewater, Mass., registered 25 goals and 25 assists for the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL last season. 

Round 2 (No. 45): Mattias Havelid, D, Linkoping HC (Sweden-JR)

Nation: Sweden | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 5-9, 165 pounds

With their second pick in the second round, the Sharks brought a familiar face to the organization. Familiar to first-round pick Bystedt, that is. Havelid and Bystedt were teammates on Linkoping HC the past two seasons and are close friends.

"Best buddy, Filip Bystedt, was also drafted by [the Sharks], so I'm really happy and proud," Havelid said in a video posted by the Sharks on Friday. "I can't wait to get started."

Havelid's twin brother, a 5-foot-10 goaltender named Hugo, went undrafted.

Round 3 (No. 76): Michael Fisher, D, St. Mark's School (HS)

Nation: USA | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 6-2, 198 pounds

In the third round, San Jose added its second defensemen of the draft. Fisher, a prep star from St. Mark's School in Massachusetts, tallied 13 goals and 37 assists in 28 games last season. He's committed to play at Northeastern University along with fellow Sharks draftee Lund.

Round 4 (No. 108): Mason Beaupit, G, Spokane (WHL)

Nation: Canada | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 6-5, 188 pounds

The Sharks' only goaltender selected in 2022, Beaupit is coming off his first full season in the WHL. In 49 games between the pipes for the Spokane Chiefs, Beaupit logged a 20-22-4 record and 3.63 goals against average. His tall, 6-foot-5 frame will be intriguing to track over the years as he joins the organization.

Round 5 (No. 140): Jake Furlong, D, Halifax (QMJHL)

Nation: Canada | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 6-0, 189 pounds

Furlong has spent the last two seasons playing for the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL. He posted four goals and 38 assists across 67 contests last season, up from just 10 points (one goal, nine assists) in 37 games the prior season.

San Jose also had the No. 138 overall pick, but Grier opted to send it to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for a 2023 fifth-round pick.

Round 6 (No. 172): Joey Muldowney, RW, Nichols School (HS)

Nation: USA | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 5-11, 155 pounds

Muldowney led the Nichols School Vikings with 97 points in 56 games last season -- 57 goals and 40 assists. He also made an appearance in three games for the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL and tallied a goal and an assist. He's committed to play next season at the University of Connecticut.

Round 7 (No. 195): Eli Barnett, D, Victoria (BCHL)

Nation: Canada | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 6-6, 219 pounds

The fourth and final defenseman taken by the Sharks, Barnett debuted in the BCHL for the Victoria Grizzlies in 2021-22. In 53 games, Barnett posted three goals, 10 assists and 40 penalty minutes. At 6-foot-6 and 219 pounds, Barnett has the biggest frame of any player in San Jose's 2022 draft class.

Shortly after selecting Barnett, San Jose traded the No. 204 overall choice to the Coyotes for a seventh-round pick next summer.

Round 7 (No. 217): Reese Laubach, C, Northstar Christian U18 (HS)

Nation: USA | Age: 18 | Height/Weight: 5-11, 167 pounds

The Sharks rounded out their draft by taking a local prospect. Laubach was born in San Jose and grew up attending Sharks games at the Tank. He played in the San Jose Jr. Sharks program for nearly many years before moving to Minnesota to play for Northstar Christian Academy.

In 57 games for the Knights last season, Laubach logged 51 goals and 51 assists. He committed to play collegiate hockey at Minnesota State University, Mankato, beginning with the 2023-24 season. And even better, he gets to do so with the status of a prospect for the hometown Sharks.
